Scots fall as snow falls in D2 Regional Finals

The story goes that the

Inuit of Alaska, Canada and

Greenland have somewhere

in the neighborhood of 50

words for snow and its dif-

ferent varieties.

At least a handful of those

fell on the MHSAA Division

2 Regional Final at

Grandville High School

Friday night (Nov. 12): some

closer to sleet, some more

like small balls of hail, and

big wet flakes.

Only one word was need-

ed to sum up the Traverse

City Central Trojans though:

powerful.

As dominant as the

Caledonia varsity football

team was in knocking the

two-time defending champi-

ons from Mona Shores out of

the state playoffs in the dis-

trict finals 49-21, the Trojans

were Friday night in a 42-

win over the Fighting Scots.

If there is a team in the

state of Michigan built to

win in a blizzard it is the

Traverse City Central

Trojans, even if the last time

they played in a snowstorm,

the 2020 Division 2 State

Semifinals, they were bested

by the eventual state champi-

ons from Mona Shores.

That playoff defeat in

2020 and the falling snow

were just fuel for the Trojans.

It was already snowing

when the Trojan caravan

rolled into Grandville Friday

afternoon.

“We were pumped up as

soon as we saw the snow-

fall,” Traverse City Central

tackle Kadyn Warner said.

“We’re really on a mission

now. We have a taste for it

and we’re hoping to finish

strong.”

Like their senior, Notre

Dame-bound, linebacker/

quarterback Josh Burnham

the Trojans were powerful on

both sides of the football.

The Trojan defense held the

Fighting Scots to just 188

yards of offense – their low-

est total of the season.

Offensively, Burnham

rushed the ball 29 times for

212 yards and four touch-

downs. He scored three of

those touchdowns in the first

half as the Trojans built a

35-7 lead. A former halfback

and tight end, Burnham also

had a key block on a 75-yard

touchdown run by teammate

Carson Bourdo on the final

play of the first quarter.

“We have had a lot of out-

side people saying we

weren’t going to be able to

run on this [Caledonia]

D-line and we took that per-

sonally,” Burnham said. “We

wanted to prove everyone

wrong.”

“We just knew that we

needed to take care of the

ball. Obviously, it was going

to be slippery. We still had a

couple fumbles, but I mean it

is going to happen especially

in this weather. Overall, I

think we took care of the

football pretty well.”

Burnham was in on the

first two tackles of the ball-

game for the Trojans on the

opening drive of the game

for the Fighting Scots. The

Trojans took over at their

own 44-yard-line after a

Caledonia punt. Burnham

swept around the right side

on the first snap he took and

drove forward for 2 yards.

He followed up with a four-

yard carry and then a 25-yard

touchdown run 3:08 into the

contest.

“Our plan was to put our

speed in space and that was

tough to do tonight,”

Caledonia head coach Derek

Pennington said. “Obviously,

their quarterback is a bull-

dozer in the snow. They were

big up front. Hats off to

them. They took it to us in

these conditions.”

Burnham wasn’t perfect.

Caledonia’s only touch-

down of the first half came

when Andrew DeVries

wrapped up Burnham and

teammate Owen Graham

scooped up a fumble and

returned it 34 yards for the

score with 4:26 to play in the

first half.

Bourdo made for his quar-

terback’s mishap though,

returning the ensuing

Caledonia kickoff 80 yards

for a touchdown, bumping

his team’s lead back up to

28-7 with 4:09 to go in the

first half.

Burnham scored on a one-

yard TD plunge 1:45 into the

second quarter to put his

team up 21-0, and added a

five-yard TD run with 1:

to play in the first half that

bumped his team’s lead to

35-7. He tacked on a 21-yard

TD run with 3:03 remaining

in the forth quarter.

Caledonia’s lone offensive

touchdown came on the

opening play of the fourth

quarter, a 21-yard pass up the

left side from junior quarter-

back Mason McKenzie to

wide receiver Nick Fox who

made a nice play on the ball

in the end zone to bring it in

for the score.

Connor Beach hit both of

his extra-point kicks for the

Scots, and TC Central kicker

Everest Noyes was a perfect

six-for-six despite spending

much of his play clock each

time clearing the slushy build

up of snow away from the

spot of the hold.

The Caledonia offense

went three-and-out on each

of its first two drives and

then moved the ball a bit on

its third drive of the game,

down 7-0 at the time, with

running back Brock

Townsend leading the

charge. McKenzie had a pass

intended for Fox picked off

by Bourdo however at the

Trojan 25-yard-line and

Bourdo broke free for his 75

yard TD run on the next play

of the game.

Caledonia also lost a fum-

ble a minute into the second

quarter, giving the Trojans

the ball at the Scots’ 29. A

pass from Burnham to Dante

Williams, one of two com-

pletions on two attempts for

Burnham, got the Trojans to

the Scots’ 25 and two plays

later Burnham plowed into

the end zone from a yard out.

Josh Klug finished the

ballgame at quarterback for

the Trojans, and also stepped

in to quarterback twice in the

ballgame to allow Burnham

to take a spot outside as a

receiver. Both Klug’s tosses

towards Burnham came up

empty.

The meeting opened with the
Pledge of Allegiance. Board members
present: Dean Bass, Mike Buehler,
Jamie Knight, Sharon Olson. Ab-
sent-Alesse Cross due to illness. Also
present were 7 members of the public.
Motion to approve Agenda made
by Knight and seconded by Buehler.
All “Yes” vote. Cross – Absent.
Assessor, Hastings Fire, Freeport
Fire, Thornapple Fire, and Commis-
sioner, and Cemetery Reports were
presented.
Motion made by Buehler to ap-
prove $1000.00 for cemetery markers
to plot the new section. Seconded by
Bass. Roll Call Vote of “Yes” Buehler,
Knight, Bass, Olson. “No” vote - none.

Knight talked about continued
safety concerns at the intersection of
Eckert and Woodschool due to a near
collision with a fire truck recently.
Knight talked about preparing for
the 2022 election. Office space, addi-
tional parking, better lighting for park-
ing areas.
Public Comment: Regina Young
asked about plans for the American
Rescue Plan Act 2021 (ARPA) funds.
Lani Forbes spoke on Freeport Mu-
nicipal Water Repair and the need for
800MHZ tower for police and emer-
gency radio communication. Forbes
spoke about the County Commission
formed to assist boards with ARPA
funds planning.
