THIS UNPUBLISHED DRAWING BY SAVERY FIRST AP
peared in a Christie's, Amsterdam, sale in 1983 (Novem
ber 15, 1983, lot I2).^1 It is composed of several motifs tha
recur frequently in his work, such as the waterfall, th
elaborate rock formation, and the remains of a roun
temple in the distance. Rather than being an accurate to
pographical rendering, this composition probably wa
drawn from the artist's imagination, though it was base
on forms he had seen at various points in his travels. Th
drawing seems to date from relatively late in his career
perhaps the early 16205, since it clearly relates to othe
works of that period.^2 The use of black chalk with col
ored wash continues the technique employed for his Al
pine drawings,^3 as do a number of the individual motifs.

1. The attribution was first affirmed by E. Haverkamp
Begemann at the time of the Christie's sale, a view he has sinc
confirmed.
