Browns 13, Lions 10

With the game’s outcome in
doubt and Cleveland’s season in
serious danger, the team turned
to its most reliable player.
Nick Chubb came through as
always.
Chubb caught a touchdown
pass, rushed for 130 yards and
helped run out the clock as the
Browns held on to avoid a sea-
son-wrecking upset and keep De-
troit winless.
Chubb returned to Cleveland’s
lineup after a one-game absence
because of covid-19 protocols.
The star running back had a five-
yard touchdown reception from
Baker Mayfield and then helped
the Browns put away the Lions.
Leading by three, the Browns
got the ball back with 2:29 left. As
the FirstEnergy Stadium crowd
chanted “Chubb, Chubb” before
every snap, Coach Kevin Stefan -
ski had Mayfield hand off the ball
to one of the NFL’s best backs.
Chubb ripped off runs of three,
four, 11 and 15 yards to ice it.
“Everybody was chanting
Chubb’s name at the end,”
Browns defensive end Myles Gar-
rett said. “I was definitely cheer-
ing for my guy.”
Wide receiver Jarvis Landry
also scored as the Browns barely
bounced back after being blown
out by 38 points last week at New
England.

Dolphins 24, Jets 17

Tua Tagovailoa threw a go-
ahead five-yard touchdown pass
to Myles Gaskin early in the
fourth quarter, and Miami hung
on for its third straight victory.
A week after an impressive
win over Baltimore, the Dol-
phins overcame some penalties
— and New York had sloppy
plays of its own — to get their
first three-game winning streak
since they won five in a row in
the middle of last season.
With the game tied at 14, Ta -
govailoa was facing heavy pres-
sure when he got a throw off to
Gaskin, who held on to the ball
to put the Dolphins ahead 21-14
with 10:15 left despite getting
hit by both C.J. Mosley and Isa-
iah Dunn in the end zone.
The drive was helped by a
roughing the passer penalty on
John Franklin-Myers on third
down from the 6, when Ta -
govailoa’s pass to Gaskin fell in-
complete.
A penalty hurt the Jets again
on Miami’s next possession,
when Ta govailoa was sacked on
third down and it was wiped out
by a defensive holding call.
Ta govailoa finished 23 for 33
for 273 yards and touchdown
passes to Gaskin and Mack Hol-
lins with one interception. Wide-
out Jaylen Waddle had a one-
yard touchdown run for Miami.

Eagles 40, Saints 29

Jalen Hurts ran for three touch-
downs and Darius Slay returned
an interception for a score for
Philadelphia. The Eagles have
won two in a row for the first time
this season, and rookie coach
Nick Sirianni earned his first vic-
tory at home in five tries.
New Orleans dropped its third
straight since it lost quarterback
Jameis Winston to a season-end-
ing ACL injury during a win over
Ta mpa Bay.
Trevor Siemian threw three
touchdown passes and two picks
and ran for a score without several
missing starters around him. Run-
ning back Alvin Kamara and offen-
sive tackles Terron Armstead and
Ryan Ramczyk didn’t play.
The Eagles led 20-7 with under
a minute left in the second quar-
ter when Slay stepped in front of
Siemian’s pass intended for Deon-
te Harris and returned it 51 yards
for his third touchdown in four
games.

49ers 30, Jaguars 10

Jimmy Garoppolo threw two
touchdown passes for the third
consecutive week, and San Fran-
cisco dominated Jacksonville for
its third win in four games.
Coming off their best game of
the season — a 31-10 stunner
against the Los Angeles Rams
on Monday night — the 49ers
traveled cross-country on a
short week and looked every bit
like a playoff contender for the
second time in six days.
They scored on their first five
possessions, including opening
the game with a 20-play drive
for a field goal that took more
than 13 minutes, and set the
tone for what would be another
long day for the Jaguars.
San Francisco ran 33 of the
game’s first 37 plays and had
more first downs (14) than
J acksonville had yards (12)
m idway through the second
quarter.
Garoppolo completed 16 of
22 passes for 176 yards. He con-
nected with Brandon Aiyuk and
George Kittle for scores. Deebo
Samuel ran eight times for
79 yards and a touchdown.

BY TERESA M. WALKER

nashville — David Culley rel-
ished a big win a couple of hours
from his Tennessee hometown
with his brother and sister watch-
ing.
Just not enough for the first-
year Te xans coach to hand out
game balls.
“We ain’t won enough ball-
games to get any game balls,” said
Culley, a native of Sparta who
played at Vanderbilt.
The Te xans snapped the NFL’s
longest active skid by beating the
Titans, 22-13, to end the league’s
longest winning streak on a wet
and rainy Sunday. The Te xans
(2-8) came in having lost eight
straight since they won their sea-
son opener and hadn’t scored a
touchdown on the road since
Sept. 19.
Desmond King had two of the
Te xans’ four interceptions that
tied a franchise record — three in

the fourth quarter to snuff out the
Titans’ attempted rally. Houston
turned those and a muffed punt
into 13 points. The Te xans also
had two sacks.
“It’s just huge to get this thing
rolling,” Houston linebacker
Kamu Grugier-Hill said. “It’s been
tough. It’s been super tough. To
come out here and get a big win
on the road against probably one
of the best teams i n the AFC, that’s
huge. So we’re excited.”
The AFC-leading Titans (8-3)
had t heir six-game winning streak
snapped with their first loss since
Oct. 3. That came against the
then-winless New York Jets.
Tennessee outgained Houston
420 -190. But the Titans couldn’t
overcome their mistakes on a day
when their injury list grew even
longer with wide receiver A.J.
Brown knocked out of t he g ame in
the third quarter with an injured
chest.
“We just kept shooting our-
selves in the foot, you know?”
Titans quarterback Ryan Ta n-
nehill s aid after a career-high four
interceptions. “Turnovers, turn-
over on downs, penalties. We shot

ourselves in the foot all day. And
we got to get better, and it starts
with me.”
Titans Coach Mike Vrabel said,
“Our offense certainly was its own
worst enemy.”
Tennessee already declared six
out for this game, including three
starters, and also put linebacker
Bud Dupree on injured reserve.
Starting cornerback Jackrabbit
Jenkins was a game-time scratch
with a chest injury.
The Te xans left defensive line-
man Jonathan Greenard and his
seven sacks in seven games back
in Houston with an injured foot.
Houston, fresh off its bye, took
a 3-0 l ead o n its opening drive and
never trailed again. Grugier-Hill
picked off Ta nnehill’s pass and
returned it 82 yards t o the Tennes-
see 6 at t he end of the first quarter.
Tennessee held the Texans to a
second field goal by Ka’imi Fair-
bairn to make it 6-0.
Taylor capped a 76-yard drive
by scrambling seven yards to the
end zone, where he flipped over
Titans safety Amani Hooker for
the touchdown. It was Houston’s
first touchdown on the road since

Sept. 19 at Cleveland. But Fair-
bairn’s e xtra point was wide left in
heavy rain.
“To see your quarterback do
that especially, I kind of went, ‘Aw,
shoot, just come down in one
piece,’ ” Texans running back Rex
Burkhead said.
Tennessee tried to score just
before halftime. But Ta nnehill
was flagged for intentional
grounding with four seconds left
and no timeouts remaining.
A muffed punt summed up the
Titans’ day. Titans returner Ches-
ter Rogers tried to turn away from
the ball after a Te xans defender
ran past him only to have the ball
hit his right heel. Trevon Smith
recovered before a big Texans
celebration in the end zone.
Taylor ran five yards for his
second touchdown and a 19-0
lead with 7:00 left in the third.
Ta nnehill tried to start the
comeback with an 18-yard touch-
down pass to rookie Dez Fitzpat-
rick with 2:24 left in the third.
Anthony Firkser recovered a fum-
ble in the end zone to pull the
Titans within 19-13 with 7:47 left.
