n October 1929, four years
after the birth of contract
bridge, the Bridge World
published its first issue. It
has appeared every month
since, chronicling the game’s
evolution and maintaining a
reputation for excellence.
The Bridge World has
material for experts and
aspiring players. In an
“Improve Your Play” fea-
ture, South declares at four
spades, and West leads the
K-Q of clubs. After ruffing,
how should South operate?
South must keep trump
control so he can take his
heart tricks. He is at risk
if West has A-J-x-x. Then,
if South leads the king of
trumps next, West will duck,
win the next trump and force
again with a club. South
loses control, and West
scores a third trump trick.
South must lead the 10 of
trumps. West can’t prevail by
taking the jack and leading
another club: Dummy can
ruff, and South preserves his
own trump length.
No serious player should
be without The Bridge World.

DAILY QUESTION
You hold:
♠ A J 6 4 ♥ 6 5 3
♦ 10 2 ♣ K Q 9 8
Your partner opens one
diamond, you respond one
spade, he bids two clubs
and you raise to three clubs.
Partner then bids three
spades. What do you say?
ANSWER: Your three clubs
invited game, and partner
would have passed if not
interested. His three spades
suggests a good hand with
3-1-5-4 distribution. Since
you have no “wasted” heart
honors, bid five clubs.
Partner may hold K 7 3, 2, A
K 8 6 3, A J 10 5.
