50 Artists & Illustrators``````7 BE BOLD WITH COLOUR``````Some of the colour needs to bestrengthened. Making sure everything isthoroughly dry, I apply pure water again ona petal and repeat the process mentioned instep 5, deepening the colour without alteringthe balance of different yellows. The firstwash should be thin enough not to be liftedby the second one, or the third or fourth one,if needed.``````6 SOFTEN THE TEXTURE``````Again I paint my way around the flower, covering the shadows and mid-tones withyellow washes applied wet-in-wet, reservingthe highlights. All this water keeps the texturesoft, with no hard lines within the outline ofeach petal. Even the veins need to be soft, orthey will look like stripes rather than beingpart of the texture.``````5 BRING ON THE YELLOW``````I wet the paper and add pure colours, letting them interact on the wet surface.First the Lemon Yellow, then a few dropsof Permanent Yellow, followed by NewGamboge along the veins and towards thebase of each petal. Before the wash dries,I add a touch of Winsor Orange to the base.``````4 PAINT THE PETALS``````I work my way around the flower, one petal ata time, making sure that one petal iscompletely dry before I wet the adjacent one,so that the washes do not overflow acrossthe borders, which would blur the lines andlose the accuracy of the drawing. Notice thatthe shadows in the centre and the foliage areheavier than on the petals.
