Over the next 50 years, Josef Albersdeveloped concepts of colour organisation that wouldbe outlined in his work Interaction of Color. Hisextensive series of paintings and prints, called Homageto the Square presented innumerable subtleinteractions between colours of varying hues. Paintersfrom post World War II Abstractionists, to pop artists toMinimalists employed the pure concepts of colourinteraction inspired by the work of Josef Albers. In arteducation, along with the Munsell System, the Alberssystem of colour interaction became standard inclassrooms across Europe and America. The result of the developments of the many newpigments in the 19th and 20th century, along withexperiments in aesthetics and content, has presentedthe contemporary artist with a number of paletteoptions. The classic palette continues to be a solid, reliable and flexible choice, while limited earth palettesserve many artists by providing attractive neutrals andsubtle colour gradations. Palettes of only red, yellowand blue and prismatic palettes all remain verycommon still today. The key to understanding the palette choices andtheir function remains the same: it’s aboutunderstanding the hue, value and chroma of eachcolour, and how it mixes with others.http://www.algury.com70 Al Gury.indd 73 08/06/2016 16:27
