Pastel wasa favourite new medium in Britain between about1730 and 1830, and was restricted almost entirelyto portraits, as it silkiness and luminosity werefound to be particularly suitable for depicting skinand textiles. The exhibition includes work by some of themasters of 18th-century pastel painting,Jean-Etienne Liotard and William Hoare.A Handful of Dust runs from 13 February to 6November at the Holburne Museum, Bath, BA2.http://www.holburne.org``````Stanley Spencer: Visionary ofthe National WorldA stylistic and experimental painter in20th-century England, Sir StanleySpencer, CBE, RAâs work oftenexpressed his fervent, if unconventional,Christian faith. In this exhibition, his skillwith depicting natural subjects isexplored through a series of well-executed flower paintings, garden vistasand landscapes, rendered in almosthallucinatory detail.Amid the flora and fauna are paintingsthat directly remind us of the spiritualnature of Spencerâs work: biblicalhappenings, emanations of cemeteries, and the emotional resonances of someof Spencerâs finest double portraits. The collection includes Spencerâsmemorable Angel, Cookham Churchyard,1934, lovingly returned to its homevillage. The series of Spencerâs stunningnature paintings will act as a centrepiecefor the show.Stanley Spencer: Visionary of the NationalWorld runs from 24 March to 31 October atThe Stanley Spencer Gallery, Cookham,SL6. http://www.stanleyspencer.org.uk``````© THE HOLBURNE MUSEUM``````STANLEY SPENCER, RESURRECTION REUNION, 1945
