Crucial Diagnostic Tests
ACTH Stimulation Test
This test measures the level of cortisol in a patient’s blood after injection of syn-
thetic ACTH. It is used to diagnose Cushing’s syndrome, Cushing’s disease, pri-
mary adrenal insufficiency, and ACTH insufficiency. Explain to the patient that
this is a non-fasting blood test.
Aldosterone Test
This test measures the level of the hormone aldosterone in the blood. It is part
of the workup for hypertension and is also used in diagnosing aldosteronism,
adrenal adenoma, hyperplasia, nephrotic syndrome, Addison’s Disease, Diabetes
Mellitus, and acute alcohol intake. Explain to the patient that this is a non-fasting
blood test.
Blood (Serum) Calcium Level Test
This test measures the level of calcium in the blood. It is used to evaluate para-
thyroid and renal function. Also, the level rises in certain malignancies. Explain to
the patient that this is a non-fasting blood test.
