Welcome to Corriewood!

Who knew the women of Weatherfield were mums of some
of the coolest stars right now? Of course we are all now aware

that Coronation Street’s Sally Metcalfe — sorry, Dynevor — is
mother of Phoebe Dynevor of Bridgerton fame. But did you

know that former Rovers landlady Denise Welch is mum to
the 1975’s Matty Healy — or should we say mother-in-law-in-

waiting to his girlfriend, FKA Twigs? The trio were spotted
on a family outing to a show by RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star

Vinegar Strokes just before the pandemic (there are a lot of
enthusiastic flame-emoji comments from Welch on FKA

Twigs’s Instagram too). Then there’s Katy Cavanagh, who
played the charismatic Julie Carp in the soap for seven years.

The actress has been accompanying her 16-year-old son,
Noah Jupe — better known as the son from A Quiet Place Part

2 and Henry in HBO’s The Undoing — on the red carpet
lately. Watch out for Jupe’s rise in 2022: he has just been cast

in a new indie drama with Casey Affleck and Zooey
Deschanel and will be in the remake of The Lost Boys next

year. Lastly, only hardcore Corriephiles will recognise Cheryl
Prime, who played trainee machinist Kathy Barrett at

Baldwin’s Casuals in 1982. Nevertheless, her son Toby Engel
just married heiress Ivy Getty (great-granddaughter of J Paul

Getty) in a lavish ceremony officiated by Nancy Pelosi.
Anya Taylor-Joy was maid of honour and Princess

Maria-Olympia of Greece was among the guests
— although the real fun must have been at

Prime’s house in Surrey, where Getty and Engel
spent time during the pandemic. Don’t look so

shocked: Corrie is the show that gave early acting
gigs to Patrick Stewart, Ben Kingsley, Stephen

Graham and Joanna Lumley after all.

Everyone’s bragging

about ... their statement stool

Matt Gibberd, a co-founder of the Modern House, recently said

that “one of the greatest pieces of product design ever made is
the 60 stool by Alvar Aalto”, and we have to agree that the humble

stool can be one of the hardest-working pieces in your home.
The fashion designer and artist Jonathan Saunders included

beautiful minimalist stools as part of his new homeware line
(above left), while Yinka Ilori has just released some bright and

bold versions. See also the sculptural style from the buzzy new
brand Nmbello Studio, which landed in the UK this year.

Furoshiki up your presents

Give your Christmas gifting a sustainable update with furoshiki
— pieces of cloth traditionally used by the Japanese to wrap

goods that can be passed on and reused. In a new book the author
Tomoko Kakita offers 30 ways to fold the perfect furoshiki (you

will find plenty of tutorials on YouTube to help you too). Bonus:
they’ll make that panic purchase seem a lot more thoughtful.

Furoshiki and the Japanese Art of Gift Wrapping, published
by Laurence King at £12.99, is out now
