Structure and Function of Bones

10–16 To understand the skeletal system, it is important to know the types and
names of major bones, their functions, and where they are located. Regardless of the
size or shape of a bone, the CF used to designate bone is __________ / _____.

10–17 There are four basic types of bones: long, short, flat, and irregular. Long
bonesare longer than they are wide and are slightly curved for strength. Long bones
vary tremendously in size and include those in the thigh (femur), leg (tibia and
fibula), arm (humerus), and fingers and toes (phalanges). Short bones are somewhat
cube-shaped and are nearly equal in length and width. Examples of short bones are
the carpal (wrist) bones and the tarsal (ankle) bones. Flat bonesare broad and thin.
They cover and protect soft body parts, such as the cranial bones, which protect the
brain, and the sternum and ribs, which protect organs in the thorax. Irregular bones
have varied shapes and sizes and are commonly clustered, such as the bones of the
vertebrae and certain bones of the ears and face.
Refer to Figure 10–3 to review the different types of bones.
