Scots shooting
to dominate
SWMSC for sixth
straight title
Brett Bremer
Sports Editor
The Scot skiers are going
for six in a row.
The Caledonia varsity
boys’ ski team won its fifth
consecutive Southwest
Michigan Ski Conference
championship last winter
while the program’s ‘B’ team
won a conference title for the
second season in a row.
The team brings back a lot
of talent from that squad
highlighted by the return of
senior all-conference skiers
Ben DeGood and Tyler Roy
who will fill spots in the top
two flights for the Fighting
Scots.
Junior Tyler Dean, junior
all-conference skier Sean
Rice who was the ‘B’ MVP a
year ago, and sophomore
all-conference skier Braydon
Smith are back too.
Rice won the Giant
Slalom in the conference a
year ago, marking the first
time the conference has
had a ‘B’ team skier win
an event. That shows off
the kind of depth that has
been built in the program
which had been led by
coach Duane Petrosky
over the past seven sea-
sons.
Petrosky said that look-
ing at times from last year
for the kids returning in the
conference he could envi-
sion eight to ten Caledonia
guys capable of finishing in
the top 15 in the confer-
ence. He said there is very
little variance in the speeds
put up between his team’s
top and bottom guys.
“These kids push them-
selves and are consistently
fast,” Petrosky said.
“We are extremely deep
this year. I think I have 10 or
12 kids who would be in the
top six for any team in our
conference, which creates a
huge amount of friendly
competition to be one of our
starters,” Petrosky said. “We
are lucky that we have such
great athletes and all of them
are incredible kids that want
the team to achieve at the
highest level.”
The program has a strong
junior class and a few other
underclassmen who will be
working to get into the top
six or be leaders on the ‘B’
team. Those guys include
Luke Shuster (junior),
Brendan Scheid (junior),
Mario Roeske (Junior),
Nick Kittredge (junior),
Carsen Kamminga (junior),
Mason Peters (sophomore),
Ben Diegel (sophomore),
and DJ Potger (freshman).
“We are a little inexperi-
enced on bigger slopes and
plan to travel north a lot this
winter to give our skiers time
on the bigger steeper slopes
so we are prepared for our
invitationals and Regional at
Caberfae this winter,”
Petrosky said.
“The coaches are
extremely excited about
this season, we feel that the
boys can win their sixth
straight SWMSC champi-
onship, and be in the top
three at the invitationals we
are competing in. We have
put a training program into
the works that we think will
have our kids peaking by
Regionals and we have a
shot at being in the top
three to qualify for the State
Finals.”
Mattawan and Portage
will be the top challengers
the Scots face in the
SWMSC.
The Fighting Scots are
slated to open the season at
the Dec. 15 Battle for
Bittersweet, but there is little
chance of there being enough
snow to ski that day. The
SWMSC season starts Jan.
12.
