Chris Harris underlined his developing
reputation as one of the finest centres
in the game as he spearheaded Glouc-
ester to their first league win against
Bristol Bears in six matches.
Harris combined elegantly with his
centre partner, Mark Atkinson, to give
George Skivington, the Gloucester
director of rugby, plenty to smile about
on his birthday. Ruan Ackermann, the
flanker, also excelled, with the home
side hinting at a genuine renaissance.
The win, which was capped off by a
dazzling bonus-point try by Charlie
Chapman, the replacement scum half,
puts Gloucester into the Gallagher
Premiership play-off positions, at least
briefly, while Bristol remain 11th.
The Bristol backs set new standards
in Premiership haute couture, with four

like we have the lads and we have the
superstars. We just have a great group.”
Harris and Atkinson became in-
creasingly influential as the half wore
on. Harris took Gloucester close to
their first try as he stretched the Bristol
defence down the right, and his sleight
of hand helped the hosts to feel their
way into the game.
If the midfield orchestrated Glouces-
ter’s field position, it was their lineout
that finally drew the points when the
hooker Jack Singleton polished off a lin-
eout drive in the corner that Hastings
could not convert. Alapati Leiua, the
Bristol wing, came close to an immediate

riposte, but Gloucester held firm to give
the hosts an 8-3 half-time lead.
Semi Radradra immediately re-
placed Leiua to make his first appear-
ance since winning sevens gold with Fiji
at the Olympics, and Bristol played
with new-found vigour. Charles Piutau
and Harry Randall made lacerating
breaks before Henry Purdy, the wing,
latched on to Sheedy’s cross-field kick
to score. Sheedy’s conversion gave
Bristol the lead.
The Atkinson-Harris axis then func-
tioned beautifully to put Gloucester
back into the lead. Atkinson nudged
through a deft grubber that Harris was

on to in a flash for the touchdown.
Gloucester extended their lead to
22-10 when they were awarded a penal-
ty try. Dan Thomas, the Bristol flanker,
was sent to the bin for halting a maul by
dragging it down, and the match was
Gloucester’s to lose.
The Bears pawed away at Glouces-
ter’s tryline but Gloucester’s new-found
doggedness kept them out, and
Chapman then delivered his last-
minute dash to seal the bonus point.
“We couldn’t get momentum and
when we did we turned the ball over.
That’s the frustration,” Pat Lam, the
Bristol head coach, said.

of their number wearing Lycra leggings
to protect themselves from abrasions
on Kingsholm’s artificial surface.
The stand-out player early on was
Ben Meehan, the home scrum half,
whose canny chip gave Gloucester the
field position from which Adam
Hastings kicked a penalty. Callum
Sheedy, the Bristol fly half, soon
cancelled that out with a goal of his
own.
Gloucester finally found their feet
thanks to their muscular yet smart mid-
field. If there are more balanced centre
combinations in the Premiership than
the ones that Gloucester have at their
disposal then they must be stratospher-
ically good. The club’s options are rich.
There is the rangy ball-playing skills of
the newly capped England midfielder
Atkinson, the defensive leadership of
Scotland’s Harris and then the guile
and ball-carrying strength of Billy
Twelvetrees.
Skivington said of Harris: “He is up
there in the best centres [in the world],
up there in the top five at least.
“Our returning internationals bring a
bit of energy and bit of class. But it’s not
