Arabic: An Essential Grammar

(backadmin) #1
Note: Observe that the middle

alif (ا) in ِما َئ ٌة mi

atun, as an alternative form

of ِم َئ ٌة mi

atun, is not pronounced.

Examples:

34.11 The plural of ِم َئ ٌة mi

atun is ِم َئا ٌت mi

a ̄tun, which is an excep-

tion. In compound numbers it is always singular, not plural like the

words for a thousand and a million, e.g.

ِت ْس ُع ِم َئ ٍة tis

u mi

atin, nine hundred (not: ِت ْس ُع ِم َئا ٍت tis

u mi

a ̄tin)

34.12 The number thousand (1,000) in Arabic is َأْل ٌف

alfun. The

dual of it is َأْل َفا ِن

alfa ̄ni in the nominative, and َأْل َف ْي ِن

alfayni in

the accusative and genitive. The plural is ُأُلو ٌف

ulu ̄fun or ا َلا ٌفƒ

a ̄la ̄fun.

34.13 The number million (1,000,000) is ِمْل ُيو ُن, milyu ̄nu. The dual

forms are: ِمْل ُيو َنا ِن milyu ̄na ̄ni (nom.) and ِمْل ُيو َن ْي ِن milyu ̄nayni (acc. and

gen.). The plural is َم َلا ِيي ُن mala ̄yı ̄nu (diptote).
