n this project, I’ll be
showing you how to
turn a printed face
photograph into
a folded one, while
challenging and enhancing your
origami skills. (Warning: some
patience is needed!)
Not all photo projects need to
be complex, and this is a simple
process that won’t break the
bank. All you need is a printed
portrait image, scissors, your
hands and a bit of luck. I found
that the final result was slightly
trial and error, but there are a
few tips to bear in mind while
you construct this paper
structure. The first is to make
sure you accentuate the eyes
by folding them in or out of the
face, as this produces a better
three-dimensional effect. I also
established that you need to
cut the face shape out from the
paper, to make sure it is only
the face within the sculpture.
It doesn’t matter too much
what the portrait looks like.
These portraits were shot on
a Sony Alpha 37, using natural
lighting, to make the portrait
as simple as possible. You
do not need great skill or
even an expensive camera
to accomplish this project:
just some creative charm and
a lot of folding endurance!

How to create
the effect
This technique takes a lot of
trial and error to achieve the
look you want, and you can
experiment with different
papers and materials (as well as
with colour and black-and-white
versions of the image) to find
the best result. I found that the
best texture for this was glossy
card, due to its more durable
and supportive structure.
Once the image has been
printed, cut round it, and fold
the image into structured and
dynamic shapes, distorting the
face into visible structures.
