Initial edits in Adobe Camera Raw
Infrared images straight out of the camera will look reddy
pink – nothing like the contrasting and dynamic images we’re
used to seeing. This is because images have been switched
to mono, with the tones tweaked to bump up the Contrast.
We opened up our image in Camera Raw first, and tweaked
the Shadows, Highlights and Contrast sliders.

Boost up the infrared effect with an edit
Converting IR images with Lightroom’s Black and White IR
preset gives a pleasing result. Other colouring treatments
include using Split Toning and changing the balance of
highlight and shadow colours; swapping colour channels
in Photoshop’s Channel Mixer; or using a Levels Adjustment
Layer and selecting a grey tone. IR images are designed to
be unreal, and experimental approaches will bear fruit.
