It is also used instead of en(see 1babove) when the name of the country is further
qualified e.g. dans la France des années 60; dans l’Afrique post-coloniale.
d de can denote the origin. With a feminine name it remains as de, e.g. Il vient de Grèce;
with a masculine name it becomes du, e.g. Elle revient du Japon; with a plural name
it becomes des, e.g. Ils arrivent des Pays-Bas.
e par indicates a notion of transit (= through, via) e.g. Elle est passée par Los Angeles/par

a en/dans
Enindicates the amount of time necessary to do something, e.g. Je peux le faire en une heure(=
I can do it in an hour/it’ll take me an hour to do it), whereas dansindicates a deadline, the
time after which something will occur, e.g. Je peux le faire dans une heure(= I can do it/start it
in an hour’s time).
b depuis, pendant, pour
Depuisindicates a period of time up to the moment referred to (past or present), e.g. Il
habite/habitait chez nous depuis un an. (See also Prepositions in the text, 5d,above.)
Pendantis used for an actual period of time, e.g. J’ai travaillé en entreprise pendant un mois.

Àis not the only preposition to govern infinitives. These can also be preceded by
après/de/pour/sans.
e.g. après avoir fait ses adieux(= after she made her goodbyes)

pour finir son repas(= to finish her/his meal)
il traversa la rue sans regarder(= he crossed the road without looking)
