Teach Yourself Visually Knitting

(Michael S) #1
By now you are becoming an avid knitter, and you want to find out more about where to get yarn
and tools. Or perhaps you want to join a knitting guild. This appendix tells you where you can find
yarn- and knitting-related information.

YOUR LOCAL YARN SHOP
It’s a good idea to establish a relationship with your local yarn shop (or LYS, as seasoned knitters call it), if you’re fortu-
nate enough to have one. Shopping for yarn in person is always the best method because you can see the actual colors
and touch the yarns. Your local yarn shop owner and employees can also help with technical questions, yarn substitu-
tions, pattern selection, and much more. You can find a list of yarn shops online at http://www.woolworks.org/stores.html.

KNITTING GUILDS
If you’re really enthusiastic, you can join your local knitting guild. Knitting guilds usually meet once a month,
and they also sponsor various knitting events. Yarn markets, knitting conventions, design contests, fashion shows,
knitting lunches, and lectures by knitwear designers are all knitting-related events that you may gain access to
through joining a knitting guild. You can also join The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA), a national guild. Visit its
Web site, at http://www.tkga.com. Or you can look for a guild near you at http://www.woolworks.org/guilds.html, where
local knitting guilds are listed by state.

KNITTING MAGAZINES
The selection of knitting magazines available has grown over the years. These are a few of the most popular
knitting magazines:
Cast On Knit.1
Family Circle Easy Knitting Knit ‘n Style
Interweave Knits Vogue Knitting
Knitter’s Magazine
A few yarn companies also put out magazines, which are actually pattern support for their yarns. You can
subscribe to these magazines so that you receive them as soon as they come out. A couple of these are:
Rebecca(GGH/Muench Yarns) Rowan Magazine(Rowan Yarns)
