Legendaryco-driver Wisdom(in dark top) – daughterof racer/journalist
Tommyand Brooklandsace Elsie– died on 15 October. Indoctrinatedfrom
an earlyage throughher parents’motoringexploits,Wisdom’s partnership
with Pat Mossdatedbackto showjumpingcontestswhenWisdomhelped
as a groom.But as soonas she obtaineda drivinglicencein 1956,the two
girls teamedup for a Sundaytreasurehunt.The rallyingbug had bittenand,
by the end of the year, they had enteredthe RAC Rallywith a works MGA.
Therewas no stoppingthe partnership,whichchalked up morethan
60 resultson internationalevents in the late ’50s. Theirproudestmoment
camein 1960,whenthey won the Liège-Rome-Liègein the works Austin-
Healey 3000,URX 727 (C&SC,Jan 2006).Not only was this the first World
ChampionshipRallywin for a femalecrew, but also the first victoryon the
gruellingLiègefor a
