This delightfulvis-à-viscompletedevery BrightonRun from 2001 to ’11
and it’s on the button...sorry,crank. De Dionsare known by their engine
number,in this case 6060,but this one also has amodernchassisnumber
imposedon it by the DVLA. It was rebuiltby its giftedengineerowner in
the ’70s, afterwhichit was blessedin Holt ParishChurch(there’s a photo).
It’s in splendidorder, with goodpaint,nicelypatinatedhide, unworn
tyresand plentyof meaton the externallycontractingbrakes – two work
fromthe floorpedal,the third fromthe drive control/ratio selector.The
rear suspensionand drivetrain have recentlybeenrebuiltwith refurbished
driveshafts,nowcarryingmodernrubberbootsconcealing‘pot’-typeCVJs.
It was rewiredand the ignitioncoil rewound last year.The motoris smart,
with polishedbrass and a lovely timbercase to the coil, but the Zenith
carburettormay be a later device than 1901.There’s watervisibleunder
the tiny radiatorcap and the total-lossoil set-upis replenishedevery
15 milesfroma delightfuloriginalcan on the offsiderunningboard.
The 498cc(84mmbore,90mmstroke: do the sums;we had to) single
startseasilyvia the side hand crank (its drive chainis in goodshape)and
runs well, but it’sabit throttlesensitive–maybedue to the later Zenith
carb.Onceyou’ve told your brain to forgeteverythingyou know, it’s simple
to operate with nearlyall the controlson the column– two ratios, fairly
directsteeringvia tiller and you don’toftenneedto tinker with the
advance/retard.It gets down the road well, with a delightfulchuffingthat
pleaseseveryone in earshot.Stoppingwith all threebrakes deployedwon’t
challengeyour G tolerance,but gets you arrestedbeforeyou get arrested.
