Phil. Wackernagel (Luth., d. 1877): Das deutsche Kirchenlied von der ältesten Zeit bis zum Anfang
des XVII. Jahrh. Leipz. 1864–1877, 5 vols. (the last vol. ed. by his two sons). This is the largest
monumental collection of older German hymns; but the first vol. contains Latin hymns and
sequences from the fourth to the sixteenth century.

So also the Stabat Mater, and the hymn of Bernard of Cluny De Contemptu Mundi (which
furnished the thoughts for Neale’s New Jerusalem hymns). The hymns of St. Bernard, Abelard,
