192 REFLECTIONS ON CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP
birth, childhood, and early career comes from collections of oral history
(with that genre ’ s poetic embellishments) gathered in the James Stuart
Archive (Stuart, 1976, 1979, 1982, 2001 ). Because writers of many ideologi-
cal persuasions have elaborated this source material, it is sometimes hard to
distinguish between myth and reality in Shaka ’ s story. Most of this material
can be found in my book, Lessons on Leadership by Terror: Finding Shaka Zulu
in the Attic (2004). Cheltenham, UK: Edward Elgar.
