Self-Help Services. Self-help career services involve the self-guided
use of career resources in a librarylike or Internet-based remote set-
ting, where the resources have been designed for autonomous use by
individuals with a highreadiness for career choice. The successful use
of self-help interventions depends on the provision of an effective
safety net that identifies persons who are not making good use of self-
help career resources and then providing a higher, more appropriate
level of service such as brief, periodic checks with users to ask, “Are
you finding the information you need?” (Sampson, 1999a; 1999b;
Sampson & Reardon, 1998). In self-help services, individuals with
high readiness for career choice are provided minimal or no assistance
