A SCREENLESS FUTURE

It’s no secret Apple has been working on
its own augmented reality glasses and self-
driving car, but it’s the screenless technology
patents that Apple has filed in recent years
that are really getting people excited. We
all know that we spend too much time in
front of our screens: our iPhones, MacBooks,
and TVs are major parts of our lives, and
being without them seems alien. Relying
on more voice-controlled technology and
devices like HomePod helps Apple achieve
its next ambition: a screenless future, where
technology is around us, rather than in front
of us. Sure, the Apple Music Voice Plan is a
very small part of that story, but it’s a part
nonetheless and suggests that Apple is looking
towards more services that take users away
from their screens and back into the real world,
where they can relax, communicate, and enjoy
life with their friends and family. Rather than
scrolling through their phones to find a song,
they can ask Siri. In the future, the same might
be true for ordering takeout, messaging loved
ones, and even doing work. A screenless future
will create a world that is every bit as reliant
on technology, but far less addictive and more
conducive to multitasking at the exact same
time. A recent report from the University of
Texas found that having a smartphone within
your field of vision can significantly reduce your
ability to focus - by removing the distraction
of an iPhone or iPad, we could become more
immersed in the real world and say goodbye to
the virtual realities we created for ourselves in
recent years.
