The new winter escape

for the 1%? Tampa!
Forget Tulum, Mustique, Goa — the super-rich will be flocking
to Tampa, Florida, this winter. “This is Tampa’s time,” says Ian
Schrager, hotelier to the elite, who is about to launch an outpost
of Edition Hotels there (below). “It’s a very exciting city that’s
now finally coming into its own.” The 26-storey hotel will open
next spring, with 172 rooms and 37 private residences — yours
for $2 million apiece. Tom Brady and Gisele are already locals.
Brady’s team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who won this year’s
Super Bowl, and until recently the couple rented a seven-
bedroom, 16-bathroom mansion with a private
dock in the wealthy Davis Islands enclave. Then
there’s Tom Cruise’s penthouse in Clearwater; he
has reportedly moved in following a years-long
renovation (rumour says there’s a custom flight
simulator inside). The Silicon Valley lot are on
their way too. Forbes named Tampa the top
destination for emerging tech hubs in America,
and Bill Gates is already an investor. Ready to start
snooping? Stream the first Selling Sunset spin-off,
Selling Tampa, which has just landed on Netflix.
The series follows the all-black, all-female Allure
Realty brokerage headed up by Sharelle Rosado.
The patron saint of Tampa, however, will always
be Hulk Hogan (left), who grew up here and
still owns a house, a Hogan’s Beach Shop
and a new restaurant, Hogan’s Hangout,
where you can buy a pound of shrimp
for $21. Booking a table now.

The acid house

smiley is back :)
Call it vicarious living, but the iconic
yellow smiley face that defined the
acid-house generation is getting a wave of
love from fashion at the moment. The symbol
was the mascot on flyers for the legendary
Shoom club nights in the late 1980s, and now H&M
is riffing on it with a smiley-themed streetwear
collection. Balenciaga and Versace have been doing
their own luxury spins too, while designer Natasha
Zinko has gone so far as to create smiley face contact
lenses if you really want to relive the good old days.
Just don’t call it an emoji. Tote, £940, Versace,
and contact lenses, £93, Natasha Zinko;
