GALILEO... MAGNIFICO!
Smeg wants to reinvent cooking with this everythingoven
Have you ever wanted to cook roast
chicken in 30 minutes, roast spuds in 20
and make a pasta bake by simply throwing
the ingredients into a dish, raw, and
pressing a button? That’s what Smeg says
you can do with its new Galileo range of
multi-tech cookers, headed up by the
powerful-sounding Omnichef.
The secret to these miracle ovens is
that they combine existing technologies
into one. Combi ovens already exist that
have a grill, microwave and standard
convection oven in one, but Galileo adds
steam, which suddenly opens up a whole
new world of possibilities.
The Galileo range uses this plethora of
techniques to give improved cooking
results. The various modes can be used
either one after the other, or at the same
time, with the Omnichef able to combine
all of them at once, which we are a bit
concerned could warp the fabric of time
and space itself.
You get the speed of microwaving plus
the well browned appearance of
traditionally cooked food plus the increased
succulence and vitamin retention of steam
cooking. The tech was apparently
developed by working with Michelin-
starred chefs and no fewer than three
universities, resulting in five new patents
pending for cooking innovations. Gosh.
Via the Omnichef’s screen, you can
access 150 preset recipes. There’s also the
ability to soften butter, melt chocolate and
even pop corn, ‘in only three minutes’.
If that feature list still sounds a little thin
to you, then you’ll be glad to know that
there are also accessories. Oh yes. Like
pizza? There’s a pizza stone. Feel like a
BBQ but it’s raining outside? There’s a
‘reversible BBQ pan’. Want to try air
frying? Hey, there’s an Airfry pan too! The
addition of steam also makes it possible to
cook ingredients sous vide. Some models
also feature steam injection, which is
particularly helpful when baking bread.
Keen chefs will no doubt be salivating
at the idea of trying out new ideas and
recipes with the Galileo range, but the less
adventurous can content themselves with
the presets turning out restaurant quality
meals at the press of a button. Just please
don’t buy one and use it exclusively to
heat up ready meals and bake potatoes.
The range in full includes the Omnichef,
SteamOne, Steam100, Steam100PRO and
SpeedwaveXL, and the technology will be
rolled out to all Smeg’s built-in oven
ranges: Dolce Stil Novo, Linea, Victoria
and Classic. The range is available from
January, with prices from £ 499 (Classic
traditional Multifunction Oven) to £3,499
(Dolce Stil Novo Omnichef).
KITCHENAID
BREAD BOWL WITH
BAKING LID
One bowl to rule them all,
this lets you mix your dough
in your KitchenAid mixer,
then prove it and, finally,
cook it – it’s oven proof and
has a lid. In theory you could
then also use it as a bread bin,
if that isn’t versatile enough.
