Guru happens to quite like

the rainbow vomit look, but

he suspects you’re seeking

a more classy output – and

potentially a classy look while the

light is off, too. As you’ve probably

worked out, the choice of colour

and brightness is entirely up to you,

and available whatever lighting

solution you choose – though

some, like Hue White and Colour

Ambiance LED Smart Lightstrip

(£70) include extra LEDs to give

you more control over the white

end of things.

Sticking some LED strips under

your kitchen cabinets and opting

for a white on the warmer side of

the temperature spectrum is

probably the way to go, but it looks

a bit rubbish when those individual

LEDs start reflecting off of a

surface; for a more consistent glow,

add a diffuser strip like those from

ultraleds.co.uk (from £3 per metre)

to break up the points of light.

If you’re opting for smart bulbs,

LIFX’s selection tends to look fancy,

Innr’s cheaper options look like any

old light bulb, and Nanoleaf’s new

Essentials line is bafflingly

geometric. However, you’ll get the

best results from Hue, and opting

for the company’s non-coloured

bulbs can save you a bundle. For

wall-mounted options, GaGu steers

you specifically towards Nanoleaf

  rather artistic, but the hexagonal
  Elements smart panels (from £200)
  just bleed class. They have a wood
  effect finish that looks rustic rather
  than technological, and emit a
  delightful warm glow when they’re
  activated, much like Guru’s well-
  weathered father.
