graphics transmissions. Classrooms are equipped with a series of speakers and
microphones. The application can include subsystems, such as remote response
systems, where students have a keypad with audio capabilities, thus facilitating
communications between students and the instructor, and even testing.

Live Feeds from Video Cameras

In a building or campus environment a live camera feed from a CEO or prin-
cipal’s office may be distributed to employees or students gathered in meeting
rooms, classrooms and common areas.

Digital Signage

Digital signage is a very compelling technology. The medium has “stickiness”;
few people will not at the very least, glance at or pay attention to a plasma or
LCD display. It’s a communication system that’s effective, immediate, and
dynamic. It can be used in a variety of building types.
The market for digital signage now seems driven by the lower costs of flat
panel displays and also by the opportunity for advertising revenues in some
venues. Inasmuch as digital signage has come of age it offers important func-
tionality in smart buildings. So how does digital signage work? And more
importantly, what are its best uses in buildings?

Digital Signage Systems

Digital signage is an application on IPTV systems that broadcasts content to a
viewer (as opposed to static signs). The digital signage networks are scalable
and can be used in one room, a whole building, or a metropolitan area and
beyond (Fig. 8.3).
The basic components of a digital signage system are very straightforward.
They include displays, media processor and controller, management worksta-
tion, and content as described in the following sections.

Displays

Video displays come in a wide variety of sizes and core technologies. Selection
of a display is based on the dimensions of the viewing area, lighting, and the
type of content and materials to be displayed. The most popular displays are
plasma screens and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
