Smart Buildings Systems for Architects, Owners and Builders

(ff) #1

Access to many FMS can also be achieved through Internet access. FMS envir-
onments typically operate on a standard Ethernet IP network using a structured
cable infrastructure and industry-standard operating systems and databases.
The definition of an FMS can be confusing, especially in comparison to a
building management system (BMS). An FMS focuses on the business pro-
cesses of facility management. It is a tool that assists in managing service
orders, inventory, procurement and assets. These systems are generally vended
by companies with specific applications for facility management operations or
by companies that are involved in broader business process products such as
human resources, finance, purchasing, and so forth (Fig. 12.1).
A BMS is focused on the operational functions of the smart building sys-
tems, primarily life safety and building automation systems. The BMS is typi-
cally vended by the manufacturer of the building automation and life safety
systems. These systems may integrate systems and controls, provide data on
specific devices or equipment, provide system alarms and allow the operators
to establish set points and system schedules, among other functions.
