Energy Management System
An energy management system (EMS) generates information on energy usage
and related costs for the purpose of reducing costs while still maintaining a
comfortable and safe environment for building occupants. As part of a smart
building the EMS brings together and addresses the main electric and energy
systems, namely HVAC, lighting control and power management.
Electrical utilities base their charges on several factors, but the most important
are power consumption and demand. Consumption is simply the total amount of
electricity used in a billing period. Demand is typically cost per kilowatt depending
on time or season (Fig. 12.3). So reducing consumption and managing demand are
basic strategies of an energy management program. An energy management pro-
gram can coordinate the HVAC and lighting control systems together with an
equipment maintenance program to achieve optimum energy usage.
