automation systems (BAS). These two standards, ANSI/TIA/EIA-568 and
ANSI/TIA/EIA-862, are applicable to all of the smart building technology sys-
tems, with the exception of fire alarm systems. Both standards allow for an open
cable infrastructure that is independent of specific products and vendors.
The primary basis for both standards is the use of unshielded twisted-pair
(UTP) copper and fiber optic cable. Both standards have similar design guidelines
and parameters for reliability, capacity, and compatibility. However, there are two
