week.
Huntley ran the Baltimore of-
fense pretty well last weekend,
throwing for two touchdowns and
running for two. If Jackson and
Huntley can’t play, the Ravens
may need to turn to veteran Josh
Johnson, who signed with Balti-
more before last week’s game.
l BEARS: Chicago will start
third-string quarterback Nick
Foles on Sunday against the Seat-
tle Seahawks.
Starter Justin Fields suffered
an ankle injury Monday night
against Minnesota and missed
practice Thursday and Friday.
Chicago’s other quarterback,
Andy Dalton, has been out with a
groin injury that happened just
before he went on the covid-19

reserve list last week.
Foles started seven games last
year for the Bears but hasn’t
played since Week 10 of last sea-
son.
l JETS: Robert Saleh is holed
up in a hotel room with the coro-
navirus, away from his family and
football team.
New York’s coach says he’s feel-
ing “good” but has come to grips
with the realization he might miss
Sunday’s game against the Jack-
sonville Jaguars.
If Saleh isn’t cleared, tight ends
coach Ron Middleton will handle
the head coaching duties in a
matchup of rookie quarterbacks
who were the first two picks in the
draft: Trevor Lawrence and New
York’s Zach Wilson.

Baker Mayfield moved a step
closer to playing against Aaron
Rodgers on Christmas as the
Browns activated their quarter-
back from the covid-19 reserve list
Friday before leaving for Green
Bay.
Mayfield has been out since he
tested positive Dec. 15, one of a
slew of virus cases the past two
weeks for the Browns. He missed
Monday’s game against Las Vegas
as Cleveland started third-string

quarterback Nick Mullens, nu-
merous backups and lost.
Mayfield hasn’t practiced in
nearly two weeks, but Coach Kev-
in Stefanski, who returned this
week after his second positive test
in two seasons, said Thursday he
anticipated Mayfield starting
against the Packers (11-3) as the
Browns (7-7) try to bolster their
flimsy playoff chances.
The virus continued to wreak
havoc across the league, forcing
teams to make adjustments in the
season’s final weeks.

Indianapolis all-pro guard
Quenton Nelson and Jacksonville
pass rusher Josh Allen were the
most notable new names to go on
the covid-19 reserve lists that
seem to change by the minute.
Losing Nelson is a major blow
to the Colts, who are hoping to
stay in the AFC South race and
play at Arizona on Saturday.
Mayfield won’t be cleared until
Saturday, when his 10-day quar-
antine expires. He won’t have to
produce a negative coronavirus
test, something he hasn’t done

despite being asymptomatic and
feeling fine.
l RAVENS: Tyler Huntley
missed practice Friday with an
illness, adding even more uncer-
tainty to the team’s quarterback
situation heading into this week-
end’s showdown at Cincinnati.
Huntley is listed as question-
able for Sunday’s game, which
pits the AFC North co-leaders.
Lamar Jackson, who missed last
weekend’s loss to Green Bay with
a sprained ankle, is also question-
able after missing practice this

NFL NOTES

Browns activate Mayfield; Colts lose all-pro Nelson

BY SAM FORTIER

In a sign the worst of the Wash-
ington Football Team’s coronavi-
rus outbreak may be behind it, the
team activated starting corner-
back Kendall Fuller, starting safe-
ty Kamren Curl, backup quarter-
back Kyle Allen and backup line-
backer Milo Eifler from the covid-
19 reserve list Friday while placing
defensive end Nate Orchard on it.
In a blow to the defense, the
team also placed safety/lineback-
er Landon Collins (foot) and re-
serve defensive lineman Daniel
Wise (knee) on injured reserve,
meaning their regular seasons are
over.
Washington also placed reserve
safety, special-teamer and team
captain Deshazor Everett on the
non-football injury list after he
was hospitalized Thursday night
following a car crash, according to
the Loudoun County Sheriff ’s De-
partment.
Washington’s covid list, once at
26 players, is down to six — though
two of the players who remain on
it, right guard Brandon Scherff
and linebacker Cole Holcomb, are
starters.
The team also announced five
coaches would miss the game at
Dallas on Sunday night because of
covid protocols. Four of them —
Chris Harris (defensive backs),
Brent Vieselmeyer (assistant de-
fensive backs/nickel), Vincent Ri-
vera (defensive quality control)
and Cristian Garcia (defensive
coaching intern) — missed the loss
at Philadelphia on Tuesday, while
Jim Hostler (senior offensive as-
sistant) was a new addition.
On defense, Fuller and Curl re-
turning is important because
Washington, which is on a two-
game skid, ruled out top corner-
back William Jackson III (calf )
and Collins (foot). Coach Ron Ri-
vera said Jackson “could be out a
little bit longer” than just Sunday
night’s game.
Washington also listed running
back Antonio Gibson (toe) and
wide receiver Curtis Samuel (ham-
string) as questionable. Rivera
said even though Gibson’s injury is
similar to the turf toe that forced
him to miss two games last year,
the running back seems better
prepared to handle it this year.
“He says that it doesn’t feel like
it did last year,” Rivera said.
In Jackson’s absence, Fuller
probably will step into the top
cornerback role, which he held
last year, though for a zone-heavy
defense such as Washington’s, it
probably won’t mean shadowing
the opponent’s top wide receiver.
The wide corner opposite him

probably will be Darryl Roberts, a
veteran who hadn’t played a de-
fensive snap this season until he
took all 71 in Tuesday’s loss to
Philadelphia. The nickel corner
probably will be Danny Johnson,
and Corn Elder probably will be
the team’s top reserve.
“We like what we got from Dar-
ryl Roberts last week,” Rivera said.
“We feel that we’re in a good spot
now that we got Kendall Fuller
back as well in our secondary.”
Fuller said he felt weak and
“achy” during his stint on the
covid list and that it was frustrat-
ing to watch the loss in Philadel-
phia from home on his couch. He
texted with Curl during the game
and was excited to return to prac-
tice Friday. He said he wasn’t wor-
ried that the time off would affect
his stamina.
“You got to play a full game,” he
said. “It’s end of the season. We got
to win.”
Curl, a versatile safety, could
replace Collins. In Week 13 at Las
Vegas, the only game Collins has
missed this season, Washington
opted not to move Curl and in-
stead use two players to fill Col-
lins’s hybrid role, known as the
“Buffalo nickel.” But neither of
those players, linebacker Khaleke
Hudson or Everett, the hospital-
ized safety, will be available Sun-
day. Hudson is on injured reserve
with an ankle injury.
Before the team changed Col-
lins’s role this season, Curl regu-
larly played Buffalo nickel. Even
when Collins, Curl and free safety
Bobby McCain are on the field
together now, the trio can disguise
coverages and switch into one an-
other’s positions, so it would be a
natural transition for Curl — espe-
cially because the safeties behind
him, Jeremy Reaves and Darrick
Forrest, haven’t shown the same
position flexibility.
Allen’s return, one day after
starter Taylor Heinicke came off
the covid list, means Washington
probably will carry three quarter-
backs for at least the next two
games. If a team signs a player off
another team’s practice squad, as
Washington did with Garrett Gil-
bert, it must keep him on the
roster for three weeks.
After practice Friday, Rivera
said he thought Heinicke “looked
fresh” and had only one regretta-
ble pass.
“I thought he looked good and
crisp in practice,” Rivera said. “I
thought Kyle looked good in prac-
tice as well. Getting those guys
back and getting it back out there,
I think, brought a little energy to
both sides of the ball.”

Fuller and Curl are back,

but Collins is put on IR

“My thoughts and prayers go out
to the family of the young lady,
and all thought to Deshazor and
his family as well. It’s a very
difficult situation. We’ll just let
things go on and let the police
and the investigation go through
and find out what happened.”
Everett, 29, is in his seventh
season after going undrafted out
of Texas A&M in 2015. After
spending training camp with the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers that year,
he signed with Washington and
has developed into a core special
teams player and key reserve at
safety.
In 89 career games (17 starts),
he has totaled 154 tackles, two
interceptions and two forced
fumbles. This season, he has
played 14 games.
[email protected]

involving Deshazor Everett,” the
team’s statement read. “A passen-
ger in his vehicle lost their life
and we extend our deepest sym-
pathies to the family and friends
who lost a loved one. Deshazor is
currently in the hospital with
serious but non-life-threatening
injuries. Our thoughts and
prayers are with everyone who
has been affected by the tragedy.”
Everett was placed on Wash-
ington’s non-football injury list
Friday. The team is not obligated
to pay his remaining salary for
the season.
“The only thing I want to say is
I was very saddened to hear the
news,” Coach Ron Rivera told
reporters via video conference
Friday after the team’s practice.
