The outline profile of an embankment dam and its foundations are illus-
trated in Fig. 2.19. The dam has a central rolled clay core flanked by shoul-
ders of compacted rockfill.

  1. Determine the construction crest level required to ensure that the
    nominal freeboard shown is not reduced by consolidation settlement.

  2. Estimate the consolidation settlement which will develop at each of the
    points 1, 2 and 3 indicated and determine the total settlement of point 4.
