Press. A study of the complexities of the Romantic reaction
to the Augustans and the controversy over Pope’s poems
that engaged the leading figures of the time.
Barnard, John (ed.) (1973) Pope: The Critical Heritage,
London and Boston, Mass.: Routledge & Kegan Paul;
paperback, 1985). A most useful selection of texts detailing
the critical response to the poems during Pope’s life-time
and thereafter throughout the eighteenth century.
Bateson, F.W. and Joukovsky, N.A. (eds) (1971) Alexander
Pope: A Critical Anthology, Harmondsworth: Penguin.
Another most useful anthology of extracts from critical
texts divided into three sections, the first part representing
contemporaneous criticism and the eighteenth century, the
second the continuing debate in the nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, and the third modern views including
those of Empson, Leavis, and the American New Critics.
