AfterfiveyearsofstudyattheRoyal."XcademyofFineArtsinhisnativecityhe
tookhisdegree,butcontinuedforthreeyearsmoreinthepaintingclass.Traveland
furtherstudytookplaceinBelgium,France,England,Switzerland,Italy,andGer-
many.LodewykandhistwinbrotherKarelwereformerlystaffartistsattheRoyal
TheateratTheHague.Theircostumedesignswereexhibitedasearlyas^1931 bythe
BrooklynMuseum.
InFebruaryof 1948 hearrivedintheUnitedStatesof.Americaandhadashow
ofhisworkinNewYork,followedbyanexhibitionataprivateresidenceinWest-
port,Connecticut,thenextyear.Severalofhisworksarealreadyinprivatecollections
inthiscountry.HelivesinChappaqua,NewYork.

InAugustof 1950 FritzBultmanwrote,"AtthismomentIwould.sayabout
painting:thatbeyondthe\isualtransparencyapaintingmusthaveatransparency
ofimageandpoetrywithoutlossofthevigorandrobustnessassociatedu,suallywith
naturalform:
