"SpirituallyIamwherevermyspiritallowsmetobe,andthatisnotnecessarily
inthefuture.Ihavenonostalgia,however....Artneverseemstomepeacefulor
pure.Ialwaysseemtobewrappedinthemelodramaofvulgarity.Idonotthink

ofinsideoroutside—orofartingeneral—asasituationofcomfort.Iknowthere


isaterrilicideatheresomewhere,butwheneverIwanttogetintoit,Igetafeeling
ofapathyandwanttoliedownandgotosleep.Somepainters,includingmyself,do
notcarewhatchairtheyaresittingon.Itdoesnotevenhavetobeacomfortable
one.Theyaretoonervoustofindoutwheretheyoughttosit.Theydonotwantto

'sitinstyle.'Rather,theyhavefoundthatpainting—anykindofpainting,anystyle


ofpainting—tobepaintingatall,infact—isawayoflivingtoday,astyleofliving,


sotospeak.Thatiswheretheformofitlies.Itisexactlyinitsuselessnessthatitis
free.Thoseartistsdonotwanttoconform.Theyonlywanttobeinspired....
