"Duringthe pastyearmyinterestinpaintinghasshiftedfromarchitectural
organizationsofprecisegeometricshapestomorerhythmicarrangementsoforganic
forms.InOminous,thesubject,whichistheCaliforniacoastafewmilesfromour
home,wasusedasapointofdepartureforthemood—theidea—IfeltIwanted
todevelop.ThefundamentalideaforOminoushadbeeninmymindforseveral
months.Itlinallybecameconcreteinacompositedrawingofvariousaspectsof
thecoast.
'"ForsimplicityanddramaticqualityIpurposelyreducedthepicturetoseveral
largedarkandwhitemasses.Withintheseareas 1 haveaddedtexturesandhavein-
troducedsemi-independentrhythmiclinestodelineatesubordinateshapes..Although
Iamstillinterestedinatypeofcompressedspacedevelopmentinpainting,inOminous
themovementintodepthisgreaterthanusual.Thecolorisstructural:designedto

Heinturnbeganteachingatanearlydate,andfrom 1939 to19.')(lwasonthestaff

ofincreasinglygreatresponsibility,linallybecamedeanofthefaculty,butfomultoo
