"OldSouthWharfwaspaintedthispastsummerinNantucket,Massachusetts,
whereIspentfourandahalfmonthsdoingaseriesofpicturesdealingwiththe
historicandromanticaspectsoftheisland.
"Inthisparticularpaintingofasectionofthewharf,thefirstthingthatin-
terestedmewasthecontinuousdesignandrhythmofthebuildings.Thebroken
verticalsofthepilings,doorsandchimneyscounterpointingthealmost unbroken
horizontalsoftheroofsandwalks,createdadesignthatappealedtome.This,
coupledwiththewonderfultextures,colorsandweatherstains,seemedan ideal
subjecttorecord.
"OldSouthWharfcontributedmuchtotheromanceandhistoryoftheharbor,
whichwasoncethesceneofthegreatestwhalingindustryintheworld.Builtin
1760,thewharfwaslinedwithblacksmithsshops,saillofts,ropewalks,provision
shopsandmanyothertradesmen'sshopstofitouttheshipsfortheirvoyagesafter
thewhale.ItissaidthatfromhereHermanMelvillesailedonthewhalingship
whosevoyagefurnishedthebackgroundforhisgreatnovelMobyDick.Thehistory
andsubtlecharmofthespotseemedtocalluponmetopaintit."
JohnSharpfurtheraddsthathewasborninGalesburg,Illinois,in1911,but
wasbroughtupinEldon,Iowa.AfterstudyingforayearandahalfattheUniver-
sityofIowahewenttotheArtStudentsLeagueofNewYorkandtheNational
AcademyofDesign,returningtoIowaforasummeratGrantWood'sArtColony
atStoneCity.
Hispaintingshavebeenexhibitedinsomeofthelargernationalgroupshowsand
werethesubjectofaone-manexhibitionattheDesMoines(Iowa)ArtCenterin
1951.HonorableMentionwasawardedSharp'sworkattheHallmarkshowof1949.
Hehastaughtprivatelyinthepastbutisnotnowteaching.Hispaintingsformpart
ofthecollectionsofthePennsylvaniaAcademyoftheFineArts;AmericanAcademy
ofArtsandLetters(twoexamples);andtheDubuque(Iowa)ArtAssociation.Since
1941 hehasbeenlivinginNewHope,Pennsylvania.
