The Utopian Communist: A Biography of Wilhelm Weitling

(Barré) #1

318 BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
author has used, besides the Weitling manuscripts and the file of Die
Republik der Arbeiter, the following papers for the period from 1850
to 1855: the New York Tribune, the Columbus (Ohio) Westbote,
the Belleviller Zeitung of Illinois, the Cincinnati Volksfreund, the
Cleveland Wächter am Erie, and the various papers edited during
these years by Karl Heinzen. In addition, for shorter periods, available
newspaper material from other German-language papers has been
cited in the footnotes. Hermann Schlüter's Die Anfänge der deut¬
schen Arbeiterbewegung in Amerika (Stuttgart, 1907) is the only
important monograph dealing with the American phase of Weitling's
career. Though that author had the advantage of interviews with
Wilhelm Weitling's widow and eldest son, his work is superficial and
disappointing.
