Record of a Friendship

and to suffer all the dirty attacks, and to give at the same time the one
for whom I work and who became famous through my work, the
freedom to behave badly against me. I would like to suggest, therefore,
that we find out whether this International Institute of 1939 still exists or
not, and to dissolve it in case it did not stand the test of the war crisis.
The work is organized anyhow locally in the American Orgone Institute,
including sex-economy, in your school, in Palestine and in other places.
I am engrossed deeply and with all my heart in orgone physical research
which will keep me busy for the next 30 to 40 years.

I gave myself several days' time to let matters sink in. Now, after
re-reading my letter to. you I think it is right to send it, and I would
like to add a few more things about my standpoint. I am ready to
work in a factual, rational, work-democratic set-up of co-operation.
It seems as if the principle of politics to unite easily and smoothly
for war, but to be incapable of unity for practical rational peace aims,
applies already to the old Institute of 1939. I am ready to give freedom
to everyone to do what he wants, but he cannot spit on my table when
he wants to and stilI expect me to relinquish my right to freely accept
or refuse his spitting. We know from spoiled children how easily they
mistake real freedom for licence, and how easily they think they are
behaving freely when they are only behaving badly. Freedom in my life
and work and concept of living does not mean that you can do whatever
you want, but that you can choose among numberless free possibilities to
do what is best toward a definite goal.
I cannot judge how far apart the members of the Institute of 1939
have drifted from each other. If you can do something to correct the
situation in the sense that there is rational co-operation and not in the
sense of licence, I shall appreciate it. I would appreciate your true
opinion and advice.
