My dear Neill:

I read your letter again since I sent my answer yesterday, and
I find that I did not answer your inquiry with my usual exactness. Your
question about my alleged dictatorship rests within and upon a much
wider and deeper foundation, though you may not be aware of it, than
my answer encompassed. The problem involved is a general human
problem, more, a problem which is at the root of all dictatorships. It is
exactly the sickness in human character structures which, through ir
responsibility and helplessness, forces the rise of dictators. I feel the
pull toward dictatorship quite clearly, though I never yield to it. It comes
from the people, in many ways. If you have to keep a scientific theory
clear and clean, based on facts and observations, if you have to keep an
industrial process going, if you have to keep trains running and a whole
society from starving, and at the same time the Barakans enter the
scene by the million, the pull toward dictatorship is tremendous. The
difference between Stalin and myself is that he does not see the problem,
that he likes house-sized pictures carried in parades, and that he has no
answer nor does he ask for one. I, on the other hand, suffer from this
sickness of humanity gravely, to an extent that amounts to dying. I know
the problem in its full impact upon human existence and I try des
perately to find the answer and to make it work. My answer at present
is: There is no way of basically changing people once they have de
veloped the wrong character structure. You cannot make a crooked tree
straight again. Therefore let's concentrate on the newborn ones, and
let's divert human attention from evil politics toward the child. This is
the new social movement. I alone carry the responsibility for the elab
oration of the necessary scientific tools to cope with this problem in a
practically efficient manner. If you hit upon this in public lectures,
please let the responsibility be mine. It is heretofore in its very practical
aspects nobody else's but mine. I am willing and able to carry it.
Now the freedom peddlers like Barakan and the rest are in the
way with their fake, do-nothing "love for mankind." They mess up
