customers to use, and reportedly even had an
iPod unboxing room where a designer would
open hundreds of boxes to ind the right
packaging for its devices. According to ‘Inside
Apple: How America’s Most Admired — And
Secretive — Company Really Works’, a designer
was tasked with creating and testing an endless
number of arrows and tapes for the iPod
packaging to ensure that it was ‘just right’ when
consumers unboxed their new device at home.
Fast-forward to 2021, and Apple has single-
handedly created a whole culture of unboxing,
Since 2010, the number of YouTube clips
featuring the term “unboxing” has increased by
871%, and with brands spending more than ever
on inluencer marketing, unboxing videos have
become an immensely popular part of modern
culture, especially in the technology sector
where stars such as Marques Brownlee can
command millions of YouTube video views for
his iPhone 12 unboxing video. Though some
might have argued that Apple’s early obsession
with design and the little things was too far, and
encouraged the company to spend more than
it should have, the truth is that it’s bred a whole
generation of obsessives where design elements
are now scrutinized en-mass.
