Synoptic situation
Fronts will move southwards
across Scotland, northern
England and parts of Ireland,
bringing showery rain, turning
wintry over some hills. Low
pressure near France may push
some rain just into far southern
England, but any heavy rain
will remain across the Channel.
Fronts will continue to spread
south, clearing through Tuesday
to leave a cold northerly fl ow.

T
he weather has been so
mild it feels like spring has
arrived early. A rich plume
of sub-tropical air drawn
up from the Canary Islands
and beyond sent New Year’s Eve
temperatures to a record high of
16.5C at Bala in north Wales,
breaking the previous record of
14.8C at Colwyn Bay in 2011. New
Year’s Day also set a provisional new
record high of 16.3C in St James’s
Park, London, beating the old
record of 15.6C at Bude in Cornwall
in 1916. And this could be a sign of
more mild weather to come this
winter, as folklore predicts: “If New
Year’s Eve night wind blows South /
it betokeneth warmth and growth.”
However, we are facing a
rollercoaster of temperatures. This
week is turning colder as
temperatures drop to near normal
for January and frosty nights return
before temperatures bounce back
for a further spell of mild weather.
The outlook looks like carrying on
blowing hot and cold for the rest of
the month.
December was also a mixed bag of
weather, although on average it was
mild. However, much of the UK sat
under a depressing blanket of thick
clouds, so gloomy that there was no
recorded sunshine for two weeks in
Lincoln, and much of eastern
England had less than half its average
hours of sunshine for the month.
Overcast skies also look like
spoiling a spectacular display of the
Quadrantid meteor shower tonight.
Hopefully a few places in the UK
will have skies clear enough to see
the meteors, forecast to peak around
8.40pm, when there could be about
60 meteors an hour.
The Quadrantids come from a
stream of debris left in the wake of a
comet. As the tiny specks of debris
shoot through the Earth’s upper
atmosphere at about 90,000mph the
friction superheats the air and
makes the meteors glow briefly as
streaks of light: shooting stars. An
added bonus is that tonight there
will be very little moonlight after the
new moon last night, so the skies
will be dark away from the lights of
towns and cities, enabling good
views of the meteors.
