The New Year’s Day card at
Cheltenham brought to an end a
week-long feast of high-class jump
racing on both sides of the Irish Sea.
Every big race through the winter,
though, is seen as a prelude to
Cheltenham in March. So what clues
can be gleaned with a view to the big
races at the Festival?
cheltenham gold cup
The King George VI Chase at
Kempton is regarded as the main
staying chase of mid-season but the
Savills Chase at Leopardstown might
well have had more of a bearing on
the Gold Cup.
Galvin produced a strong finish
there under Davy Russell to collar the
Rachael Blackmore-ridden A Plus
Tard by a short head. Despite that
defeat, A Plus Tard, who was second
to stablemate Minella Indo in the
Gold Cup last year, retained his place
as ante-post favourite to go one better
on March 18.
However, there was no fluke about
Galvin’s win and the longer trip of the
Gold Cup will definitely suit him
given that he won the National Hunt
Chase over further at the Festival last
Galvin rates the value bet in Gold Cup
season. It is difficult to see why, at a
general 6-1, he should be nearly twice
the price of A Plus Tard.
champion hurdle
The connections of the champion
Honeysuckle will have seen little to
concern them as their charge stayed
safely in her box. Sharjah and
Epatante both claimed grade-one
wins but neither should threaten the
unbeaten Honeysuckle.
champion chase
Shishkin allayed his trainer’s pre-race
worries with a brilliant display in the
Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton.
Nicky Henderson had suggested that
his charge was not quite ready for his
return on testing ground but Shishkin
made light of the conditions to thrash
Tingle Creek winner Greaneteen by
ten lengths. The Willie Mullins-
trained Energumene is unbeaten over
jumps but he will need to improve to
stop Shishkin from claiming a third
Festival win.
stayers’ hurdle
Klassical Dream claimed a fifth
grade-one success when beating last
season’s leading stayer Flooring
Porter at Leopardstown last week. He
is now 11-4 favourite for the Stayers’
Hurdle but that looks short enough
given that he was allowed to poach a
seven-length lead at the start here
and won by just two lengths. Champ
put himself in the frame when beating
Thyme Hill at Ascot but his Festival
target has yet to be confirmed.
arkle chase
Ferny Hollow is a general 6-4 chance
for this two-mile novices’ prize after
an impressive win at Leopardstown
on Boxing Day. The 2020 Champion
Bumper winner missed most of last
season through injury but has looked
better than ever in winning both
starts over fences this term and
produced a top-class effort to concede
13lb to the promising Riviere D’Etel.
triumph hurdle
Fil Dor heads the betting after an
easy win at Leopardstown but the
form looks nothing special and he is
too short at around 3-1. Icare Allen
and Porticello are close to the front of
the market after easy wins last week
but the Paul Nicholls-trained Iceo
made the biggest impression when
powering to a 17-length victory on his
British debut at Kempton.
Recommended: Galvin, 6-1 (generally)
for the Cheltenham Gold Cup; Iceo, 14-1
(William Hill) for the Triumph Hurdle
Smith to take on Wright for world title
Peter Wright stands between Michael
Smith and a maiden PDC World
Championship title after they both
triumphed in the semi-finals at the
Alexandra Palace last night.
Smith, the No 9 seed from St Helens,
edged out Gerwyn Price, the reigning
champion, 5-4 in the quarter-finals on
Saturday and followed that with a 6-3
success over James Wade. Wade, the
No 4 seed who had breezed into the
final four with a 5-0 victory over
Mervyn King, has now reached four
semi-finals and lost them all.
Smith, 31, reached the final here in
2019, only to lose to Michael van Ger-
wen, and he will look to go one better
tonight against Wright, the No 2 seed
who is seven sets away from regaining
the title he won in 2020 — Van Gerwen
was the opponent that day too.
Wright, 51, survived a tenacious
fightback from his fellow Scotsman
Gary Anderson, himself a double world
champion, last night to win 6-4.
