Ocean City 7

4 Flanders Hotel Hotel $$$
(%609-399-1000; http://www.flandershotel.com; 719
E 11th St; r $260-440; c) Shake off those sandy
motel blues at Ocean City’s Flanders Hotel:
every room is a modern, immaculate, 650-sq-ft
(or larger) suite with full kitchen, and the blue-
and-yellow decor evokes a pleasantly low-key
seaside feel.

Wildwoods 8

4 Heart of Wildwood Hotel $$
(%609-522-4090; http://www.heartofwildwood.com;
Ocean & Spencer Aves, Wildwood; r $125-245;
c) If you’re here for waterslides and roller
coasters, book a room at Heart of Wildwood,
facing the amusement piers. It’s not fancy, but
gets high marks for cleanliness (the tile floors
help), and from the heated rooftop pool you can
watch the big wheel go round and round.

4 Starlux Hotel $$
(%609-522-7412; http://www.thestarlux.com; Rio
Grande & Atlantic Aves, Wildwood; r $130-310; c)
The sea-green-and-white Starlux has the soaring
profile, the lava lamps, the boomerang-decorated
bedspreads and the sailboat-shaped mirrors, plus
it’s clean as a whistle. Even more authentically
retro are its two chrome-sided Airstream trailers.

4 Summer Nites B&B B&B^ $$
(%609-846-1955; http://www.summernites.com;
2110 Atlantic Ave, Wildwood; r $145-275) North

of the noise and lights, in an unassuming white
house, is the coolest vintage experience of all:
real jukeboxes play 45s; the breakfast room is a
perfectly re-created diner and the eight themed
rooms are dominated by wall-size murals and
framed, signed memorabilia.

Cape May 9

5 Lobster House Seafood^ $$
(906 Schellengers Landing Rd, Fisherman’s
Wharf; mains $12-27; h11:30am-3pm &
4:30-10pm Apr-Dec, to 9pm other times) Talk
about locally sourced ... You know the fish is
fresh at this classic surf and turf because the
restaurant’s own boats haul the day’s catch in.
There are no reservations which means very
long waits are a possibility; in that case try to
grab a seat at the dockside raw seafood bar.

5 Uncle Bill’s
Pancake House American $
(Beach Ave at Perry St; mains $7; h6:30am-
2pm) The size (and decor) of a high-school
cafeteria from the 1950s, Uncle Bill’s has been
drawing in crowds for its flapjacks for 50 years.

4 Congress Hall Hotel $$
(%609-884-8421; http://www.congresshall.com; 251
Beach Ave; r $100-465) The classic and regal-
looking Congress Hall has a range of beautiful
quarters to suit various budgets, plus a long,
oceanfront porch lined with rocking chairs. An
ideal location, onsite restaurant and downstairs
bar called the Boiler Room (with live music some
nights) make this hard to beat.
