Benjamin Franklin were a hotelier he would have
designed a place like this. The upscale Federal-
era building has the friendly charm and intimacy
of an elegant B&B and the professionalism
and good taste of a designer-run 21st-century
establishment.

Housed in three early 19th–century buildings
overlooking the Delaware waterfront, Penn’s
View is ideal for exploring the Old City district.
It’s quaint and full of character but not overly
nostalgic. An authentic Italian trattoria and
charming wine bar are part of the hotel.

The Art Deco facade and entryway of this
‘downtown’ West Chester hotel was fashioned
out of a 1930s movie theater, lending it a dash
of old-time elegance when it opened in 2012. It’s
modern and fairly generic inside, but it offers
plush king-sized beds and large bathrooms.

5 Mushrooms Cafe $
(878 Baltimore Pike (Rte 1); sandwich $7; h7am-
3pm Tue-Fri, 8am-4pm Sat & Sun) This bright little


cafe serves good coffee, omelets, salads, quiche,
sandwiches and, of course, mushrooms – in a
soup, dip, stuffed with sausage and by the pound.
When you’re full of ’shrooms, wander around the
attached overstuffed antiques store.

5 Penza’s Cafe $

mains 5-$10; h8am-5pm) Housed in an old red
barn between Hammonton and Atsion, having
a meal here feels like you’re eating in your
grandmother’s den. The breakfast omelets are
especially recommended, as are the homemade
fruit pies laid out in a mouthwatering display.

4 Atsion Family Campground Camping $

Rd; tent sites $20; hApr 31-Oct 1) Try to reserve
a lakeside spot (there’s a two night minimum
policy during summer) at this campground in the
Wharton State Forest. You can swim and fish and
there’s an interpretive trail that’s an excellent
introduction to the flora and fauna of the area.

5 Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern Italian $
(2300 Fairmount Ave; mains $7; h11:30am-3pm
& 5-10pm) The outdoor patio at this beloved
family-owned Italian restaurant is a nice spot to
take in the sunset and have a pint and a burger.

5 White House Subs Sandwiches $
(2301 Arctic Ave; sandwiches $6-15; h10am-8pm
Mon-Thu, to 9pm Fri-Sun; c) An icon of old AC
with an impressive range of photos on its wall
of fame. Its gigantic oily subs and cheesesteaks
could feed a family of four. There’s another White
House Subs located inside the Trump Taj Mahal.

4 Chelsea Boutique Hotel $

non-casino place that’s trendy with art-deco-style
furnishings. Rooms in the attached annex are less
expensive. Also houses a retro diner, steakhouse and
cabana club.
