1 Baltimore
Start in Baltimore, which
calls itself the ‘Crab Cake’
to New York’s Big Apple.
B’more has always been
built around its docks, and
is a port city through and
through its watery veins.
Indeed, the state’s most
prominent urban renewal
project was the Inner
Harbor overhaul, which
turned a rough dock into
a waterfront playground
for families. The most
prominent landmark,
and the best way to learn
about the state’s aquatic
fauna (and aquatic wildlife
anywhere) is the excellent
National Aquarium (%410-

E Pratt St, Piers 3-4; adult/child
$35/22; h9am-5pm Mon-Thu,
to 8pm Fri, 8:30am-8pm Sat,
8:30am-6pm Sun). Standing
seven stories high and
capped by a pyramid, it
houses 16,500 specimens
of 660 species, a rooftop
rainforest, a central ray
pool and a multistory
shark tank.
Ship-lovers should
consider a visit to the
