Basilica of the Assumption

Also known as America’s First Cathedral,

the Basilica of the National Shrine

of the Assumption of the Blessed

Virgin Mary (%410-727-3565; http://www.

baltimorebasilica.org; 409 Cathedral St; h7am-

4pm Mon-Fri, to 5:30pm Sat, to 4:30pm Sun),

commonly known as the Basilica of the

Assumption, is one of the city’s most

prominent landmarks. The structure,

with its prominent dome and twin

spires, is considered the masterpiece of

architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe.

The Walk » Head west on Mulberry St for

500ft, then turn right on Park Ave. Walk this way

for 1000ft and turn left on Monument St; the

Historical Society will be 200ft ahead on your left.

Maryland Historical Society

With more than 5.4 million artifacts,

the Maryland Historical Society (www.

mdhs.org; 201 W Monument St; adult/child $9/6;

h10am-5pm Wed-Sat, noon-5pm Sun) is one of

the largest collections of Americana in

the world, including Francis Scott Key’s

original manuscript of the Star-Spangled

Banner. Fascinating permanent exhibits

trace Maryland’s colonial, Civil War and

19th-century history.

The Walk » Head back the way you came and

turn left on Park Ave. Follow for 1000ft and turn

right on Madison St. After 500ft turn left on

Charles St and follow it uphill for 1500ft.

Charles Street

This residential neighborhood is one of

the most pleasant parts of Baltimore.

Charles St is the main thoroughfare

through the area, meandering past

row houses and sidewalk cafes. We

recommend eating at Brewer’s Art

(%410-547-6925; 1106 N Charles St; sandwiches

$9-12, mains $19-26; h4pm-2am Mon-Sat,

5pm-2am Sun), which is divided into

two portions: a subterranean cave

that mesmerizes the senses with an

overwhelming selection of beers, and a

great upstairs restaurant serving New

American cuisine.

The Walk » The Washington Monument is back

on Charles St down the hill, about 2000ft from

Brewer’s Art.
