Duels with pistols continued, and were
more deadly than sword fights – because, in
the latter, a small scratch would satisfy
someone’s honour, whereas a bullet was
more likely to be fatal.

Soil and sisterhood
As a 20-year-old female archaeology student,
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the article
on female archaeologists (Spades, Soil and
Sisterhood, December). This representation is
wonderful in itself, but it also ignited a spark
of pride in my own educational institution:
the UCL Institute of Archaeology.
I’m happy to report that the archaeology
department at UCL does indeed make a big
deal of female archaeologists, both those
of UCL and others – as well as the males.
We are well-informed on the works of
Tessa Wheeler, Kathleen Kenyon and Mary
Leakey, and feel very proud of our institu-
tional association with female excavators.
In fact, one of my lecturers made a point
of informing us about Trowelblazers.com
during one of our earliest sessions.
Thank you for sharing this inspirational
article, and here’s to all the female archaeolo-
gists – past, current and future!
