If it takes a while for you to find a creative element or
comfortable pattern through which you can regularly engage in
two-way conversations with God, keep experimenting. If you
get bored easily, change it up with variety!
For me, having a great roller-ball pen, a refillable journal, and
a reliable system for talking and listening to God has kept me in
the daily rhythm of conversing with God. I no longer spend
valuable time looking for the next best idea on how to connect
with Him.
Once you find the elements that work best for engaging your
unique personality in “God Talks,” I encourage you to stick
with them.
Second, create a comfortable, inviting atmosphere.
Whether you are at home or traveling, find a comfortable
(but not too comfortable) spot for your time alone with God. A
window seat, a chair near a fireplace, a lawn chair on a sunny
porch, or a favorite nature vista are just a few options for
enhancing your experience of being alone with God. (A warm,
cozy bed might not be the best place.)
Third, protect your space.
At home, be sure to turn off all electronic devices
(telephone, TV, computer) that are designed to get your
attention. If you’re on an airplane, bring earphones and a music
player that will allow you to “tune out” other conversations so
that you can concentrate on hearing God talk to you. You
