Savior, and your Comforter and Counselor—the Holy Spirit—
you will begin to see Him as One who is always present in your
daily life and who intimately knows you and unconditionally
loves you. Your familiarity with Him and feelings toward God
will naturally draw you nearer to Him. And as His presence
becomes more tangible to you, you can quiet your soul at any
time and in any place, admit your need, request His help, and
invite God into you. In those very moments, you are perfectly
positioned to hear God speak.
How does God talk today? Although this is certainly not an
exhaustive list, here are some of the many ways:
God Talks Through His Written Word in the
Bible
Andrew Murray, nineteenth-century South African religious
leader and author of numerous (now classic) books on prayer,
taught that the concept of hearing God speak was never meant
to be a complicated, strictly intellectual endeavor, reserved for
those who aspired to or held positions of spiritual leadership.
He taught that anyone could hear God talk to them if they
would read God’s Word. He was adamant that reading the
Bible was a necessary activity in the life of any man or woman
who wanted to sustain a healthy, vibrant personal relationship
with God.
Murray found Psalm 119 to be a perfect place to soak up
God’s words, to hear Him counsel, guide, convict, lift, and
comfort the reader.
